1843 Society Luncheon - May 2016

The 1843 Society Luncheon was held in The Adderley on Sunday 22nd May with 50 guests in attendance.

Those present enjoyed an excellent lunch before hearing from the Master, Jonathan Leigh, and the President of the 1843 Society, Martin Evans. Music scholars Finn Kverndal (C1 Re) and Darcey Goble (MM Sh) gave moving performances after lunch. Those fortunate enough to be in the Adderley thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

- June 2014

Members of the 1843 Society gathered for their annual lunch on Sunday, enjoying drinks and canapés in the Master’s Garden, before sitting down to lunch in the Adderley.

The Society recognises those who have made a bequest to the College. It meets at least once a year and 62 guests, which included those interested in finding out more and attending for the first time, were welcomed by the Master Jonathan Leigh, Mrs Emma Leigh, and the 1843 Society President, Mr Martin Evans. The Chairman of Council, Lord Malloch-Brown KCMG PC (C1 1967-71) and his wife were also in attendance.

Guests were entertained with a splendid musical recital from music scholars Helena Mackie (MO Re) and Sarah Mattinson (MM Re).  Some extended the day watching the Marlborough Blues play cricket on the XI, which provided a glorious sunny end to a thoroughly enjoyable day.

South-West France Lunch - April 2014

A most enjoyable OM luncheon took place on Saturday 5th April at the home of John Wilkinson, the South-West France Hon. Secretary, in Le Castéra near Toulouse.

There were 25 guests at the lunch, which was also attended by the Master and his wife, Emma Leigh. The Master updated us all with news of the College and he also most kindly sang the Grace.

The President, Robin Janvrin, was unable to attend but sent a warm message wishing the assembled company “a long, leisurely and completely wonderful lunch in the true traditions of La France profonde” - and this was most certainly achieved!

Martin Evans, President of the 1843 Society, was also present and our host, John Wilkinson, made us all feel most welcome.

Proceedings were rounded off with the rousing singing of The Old Bath Road.

1843 Society Luncheon - May 2013

The Master, Jonathan Leigh, presided over his first 1843 Society Lunch on Friday 10th May.

The event was doubly special as the venue was the newly refurbished Henry Rose Cricket Pavilion, overlooking the 1st XI. Mrs Jane Rose, widow of the late Henry Rose (C1 1953-57), was a guest of honour, and she was delighted with the restoration which had been carried out thanks to a generous bequest from her husband.
