Case Studies - Music Bursaries

Music at Marlborough continues to flourish.  Interest has seldom been higher with over half of the pupils currently enjoying instrumental music tuition and the vast range of ensembles, orchestras and choirs full to capacity.

OrchestraAt the very heart of the department are the 37 Music Scholars and Bursary recipients who continue to provide valuable inspiration and talent in all their musical endeavours.  Competition for Music Scholarship and Bursary places is fierce and rigorous assessment and support is offered to those Scholars throughout their career at the College, ensuring that they maximise their potential and are given the best opportunities, particularly if they wish to follow a career path in music.

“Whilst we are not a specialist music school, we certainly offer everything a specialist music school would seek to provide, but just without the label.  Despite nurturing our elite, we also seek to provide music for all in a truly inclusive music programme which sees 50 per cent of the College pupils taking instrumental music lessons and the majority of those participating in orchestral or choral ensembles.  This contributes to a very rich cultural heart throughout the College,” explains Artistic Director Philip Dukes.

The 2010/11 academic year produced some phenomenal results in both the Associated Board and Trinity Guildhall examinations.  Out of 106 exams there were 28 Distinctions, the real highlights being Hamish Brown (who gained Distinction at Diploma level for piano), Magnus Rowbotham (who gained Distinction at Diploma level for clarinet), Savannah Brown (who gained 144 Distinction for Grade 8 saxophone and 140 Distinction for Grade 8 violin) and Frances Leith (who gained 140 Distinction for Grade 8 singing) which were incredible achievements.

There were also successful competitive outings for our musicians, the Schumann Piano Quintet ensemble winning their class at the Midsomerset Music Festival in Bath and the Brass Quintet reaching the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth.

If music is an area which you would specifically like to support, then please let us know.
