The Master, Jonathan Leigh, presided over his first 1843 Society Lunch on Friday 10th May. The event was doubly special as the venue was the newly refurbished Henry Rose Cricket Pavilion, overlooking the 1st XI. Mrs Jane Rose, widow of the late Henry Rose (C1 1953-57), was a guest of honour, and she was delighted with the restoration which had been carried out thanks to a generous bequest from her husband. A full review of the 1843 Society Lunch, along with a slideshow of images, are avilable now.

We were sad to say goodbye to Janet Perrins, the Development Officer at Marlborough College, in March. Jan joined the Foundation team in December 2010, moving from a fundraising and PR role for a charity which ran an education programme for children with special educational needs, and has achieved much for the Foundation in her time here. Jan is now the Fundraising Manager at Horseworld, and we wish her the best of luck in her new role.

Sixth form pupil Zhivka Ivanova gave a stunning performance of the first movement of Grieg's demanding piano concerto at the recent Southbank Sinfonia/Marlborough College side-by-side gala concert. Zhivka was born and raised in Bulgaria, moving to Marlborough in September 2011and is a recipient of the Susie Frearson Memorial Award. The packed Memorial Hall was clearly delighted by her virtuoso display in what proved to be a memorable evening, not only for Zhivka but for all those who were privileged to witness such a talented young musician. “Very much at home under the spotlight of such conditions, Zhivka was technically assured and musically persuasive, with the orchestra backing her to perfection,” said Marlborough’s Artistic Director Philip Dukes. After winning the Senior Piano Competition at the College last year Zhivka was also awarded a music scholarship. Although music is not part of her academic studies, Zhivka follows it with equal passion. Zhivka takes genuine pleasure in each performance, most recently at the Foundation supported Music Scholars Gala Recital in London. She was recently awarded a Piano Diploma from Trinity College London and is hoping to read Architecture at the University of Bath from September 2013, whilst further developing her musical abilities and later studying a degree in piano.

Old Marlburians who have been kind enough to support the College were invited by the Master to a Drinks Reception, followed by the Carol Service in Chapel. The Carol Service is always an inspirational and spiritually uplifting herald of the celebration of Christmas. Everyone who attended agreed it was a wonderful and convivial evening. The aim of the Marlborough College Foundation is to maintain and strengthen the tradition of benefaction that has sustained and enriched the College since its establishment in 1843. The Receptions were an opportunity for us to personally thank OMs for their generosity, whose support is so important to the future of College. More..

Marlborough College was built and strengthened by benefaction and one way of making a positive difference to future generations is by leaving a legacy. Those OMs who are kind enough to do so become members of the 1843 Society. The next 1843 Society event will be a luncheon in the newly restored cricket pavilion on Friday 10th May, 2013. There the Master and staff will thank those who have a made a provision for, or are considering making, a bequest and speak about his vision for the College. Pledging a legacy will cost you nothing today but will leave a lasting impression on generations of Marlburians to come. The process can be easy and inexpensive to achieve, tax efficient in the longer term and fun from day one! If you would like to find out more about the work of the 1843 Society and attend the lunch, please contact Development Officer Jan Perrins on 01672 892439.
